Coming back on the Dalton Highway was a very different experience from going up. They were doing spring road maintenance and grading, so the road was completely changed. There were a few stretches where it was better, but mostly it was worse because they were in the middle of what they were doing. There was one section that they had just piled rubble in my lane, with an insurmountable hump of debris in the middle of the road, so I could only jarringly drive extremely slowly. Another long section had been wetted down, so it was one long tooth-gnashing slip n' slide. Top that with crappy road fatigue, and by the time I got back, I felt punchdrunk and beaten up, and weary to the bone.
